The STOP AIDS Project is currently searching for an Executive Director to lead a dynamic team of 25 employees and approximately 50 volunteers who work with our community towards a day without AIDS.
THE MISSION OF THE STOP AIDS PROJECT
The STOP AIDS Project works to prevent the spread of HIV among gay, bisexual and transgendered men in San Francisco through multicultural and collaborative community-based organizing.
Since its inception in 1984, The STOP AIDS Project has been locally and internationally recognized as a successful model of grassroots prevention and support by continually updating its programs and staying at the cutting-edge of effective HIV prevention and by recognizing and addressing the changing community and HIV epidemic. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The STOP AIDS Project is searching for an experienced Executive Director with a background in non profit management, who has proven relationship building proficiency within the gay, bisexual and transgender community. The ideal candidate will have prior experience and knowledge of HIV/AIDS work, especially in the areas of prevention strategy and programming. The Executive Director works in close partnership with the Board of Directors and is responsible for daily management and strategic oversight of The STOP AIDS Project staff.
The ideal candidate will share a passion for the mission of the Project, and bring an expertise in non-profit management, fundraising, volunteer coordination, and community relations. In order to meet the requirements of this position, the candidate must work creatively and collaboratively with a diverse workforce and client group. The candidate must be skilled at team building and able to establish positive working relationships with staff, the Board of Directors and donors. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as the Executive Director will be the spokesperson for The STOP AIDS Project, making public speeches and interacting with the community and its supporters.
The Executive Director reports to The STOP AIDS Project Board of Directors.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the implementation and execution of the strategic initiatives.
- Effectively develop/supervise staff of approximately 25 people, including a team of 5-7 Directors.
- Provide leadership in developing programs and projects, organizational structure, and financial plans.
- Develop annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors and the Director of Finance; track expenditures and ensure that funds are effectively/efficiently utilized.
- Work closely with the Director of Development to identify sources and obtain funding necessary to support the programs and growth of the Project. This includes grant writing, identifying and obtaining corporate and community sponsorship, advertising solicitation, and establishing and maintaining a major donors program.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with existing and prospective donors.
- Establish cooperative and mutually beneficial relationships with community partners and other HIV agencies/services in the San Francisco Bay Area in support of our programs and clients.
- Proactively represent SAP to the public, media and other external organizations in order to promote the Project’s mission, programs and services.
- Maintain a positive, supportive and fun working environment which attracts, retains and motivates staff and volunteers through hands-on leadership, including coordination of departmental priorities and maintaining open communications within the organization.
- Ensure compliance with The STOP AIDS Project’s policies, procedures and regulations.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- 3-5 years of experience as an Executive Director, or equivalent, of an agency supporting social justice and advocacy. Previous prevention or HIV experience is a plus.
- Education in Public Health, Behavioral Science, Management or related field. Masters Preferred.
- Proven ability to build successful relationships with staff, volunteers and community members.
- Proven ability to develop, support and drive programs and effect change.
- A demonstrated ability to oversee and participate in a diverse fundraising plan including events, major donor cultivation, and corporate and foundation grant writing.
- Strong desire to hire, develop and manage a diverse “best in class” staff.
- Dedication to and knowledge of HIV prevention and gay men's health issues.
- Experience working with GLBT populations diverse in age, race, income, and drug use, and HIV status.
