STOP AIDS Project Statement on HIV/AIDS Epidemiology Annual Report 2007

August 6, 2008 -- Last week the San Francisco Department of Public Health released the HIV/AIDS Epidemiology Annual Report, 2007. See also the Bay Area Reporter article on July 31, 2008 “HIV Report Shows Continued Declines.”

The report supports estimates first released in early 2006 that the number of new cases of HIV in San Francisco is on the decline, allaying fears of a “second wave” of high infection rates among gay, bisexual and transgender men. See STOP AIDS Project essay on declining infection estimates by clicking here.

The new numbers released by the Department of Public Health are an encouraging sign of a community accomplishment between individuals, organizations, and HIV/AIDS services. This report and other recent reports pointing to declines in HIV cases help prove that gay, bi and trans San Franciscans and our mix of services work to prevent HIV transmission. The challenge before us is to use this momentum to significantly decrease new HIV cases and move forward together to increase the health and well-being of individuals in our community.
